“Sonja Griffioen took our engagement and wedding photos. In both cases, we were absolutely blown away by her knack for identifying and capturing the essence of the moment. Our sessions with Sonja were an enjoyable and exciting time in which we could feel closer to one another. We laughed so much and came away from both the engagement and wedding ‘couple shoots feeling like we’d just had the most beautiful date with each other. Sonja’s unobtrusive manner meant that we barely noticed her presence. The amazing photos were just (an incredible!!!!!) side product of a fun and unifying experience! Sonja paid attention to the tiniest of details while still capturing the whole big picture. My husband and I are fun loving and a little quirky. He loves Lego, I tend to be more comfortable without my shoes on. Some of my favourite photos are the sneaky shots Sonja took of Dan and I laughing (my shoes in hand) and of the Lego toppers on our wedding cake. I love how she managed to snap all the girls in the wedding party bawling – with the lyrics of ‘Amazing Grace’ (a song very dear to me) visible on the projector in the background. And the shots of our cheeky flower-girl sneaking in a bite of cake are gorgeous too. Of course there are the stunning shots you’d expect – my dad’s face when he saw me all dressed up, my husband’s face when he saw my dad and I come into the church, but there are a hundred other shots that capture the other things happening on the day too. I don’t recall really explaining to Sonja who we are as a couple or what we like. We didn’t have any protracted conversations or fill out any surveys, she just got us. I know I didn’t tell her our precious my husband’s dog is to him, and I didn’t point out the special guests I really wanted her to photograph, she just picked up on it and captured many, many precious moments. Although we got many beautiful keepsakes of ourselves, Sonja took beautiful shots of our guests, many of the shots are so beautiful we have used them as gifts. All those hours spent hand-making our decorations and guest place settings were not wasted either, Sonja managed to capture the theme and the spirit of our wedding in her artistic, pretty and beautiful photos. I don’t recall even seeing Sonja during my ceremony. She took photos at all the right times but she didn’t dominate our ceremony. I loved it that she captured who we are, and the overall feeling of the day without the wedding revolving around the photographs or the photography schedule. Our wedding was a 1920’s theme. We handmade all the decorations and the ceremony was made richer by the presence of our special friends and families who all totally got into the 1920’s theme. Without being too stylised or posed, Sonja captured the rustic, vintage theme of the wedding while focusing on everyone’s joy. I still laugh (and cry) when I go through her photos. We haven’t been able to make up our minds in regard to which photos we want to put up on our walls, but it is a delightful problem to have when there are just too many amazing photos to choose from.
